Martha Washington, our first First Lady, has a connection to the Treaty Tree at Shackamaxon. She created a quilt with a linen panel depicting an engraving by John Hall (1739-1787) titled “William Penn’s Treaty with the Indians when he founded the Province of Pennsylvania in North America, 1681” as the centerpiece of a 100” by 100” quilt.
Hill’s version is based on Benjamin West’s painting but Hill reversed the images in his engraving. In other words, the figures are facing in the opposite direction.
The quilt is in the possession of the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association.
